Whenever I travel to a distant city, I go to its museums. On a recent trip
to Pasadena, California, I went to the Norton Simon Museum to visit a
favorite Vincent Van Gogh painting in its collection. I stood before it
admiring its lively brush strokes and the intense feeling he left in his
beautiful work, the way he saw this mundane subject. The work is small
called "Mulberry Tree". It looks fresh and timeless, as if it had just been
done. For some time later after my visit, I could see this painting in my
mind’s eye.
Who knows what motivates an artist to create or paint his world, but as I
walked through a Pecan orchard in New Mexico I painted this Pecan tree. The
play of sunlight defined the contours of a nearby irrigation ditch, framing
the tree with such a great sense of presence. It called out to be painted.
I mention the Mulberry Tree not to make a comparison between Van Gogh’s
work and mine, but hopefully to share an insight on why an artist paints
what he sees.

Siempre que viajo a cualquier ciudad, es mi constumbre visitar sus museos.
En un viaje reciente a Pasadena, California, asisti al museo Norton Simon
en donde se encuentra una pintura de mi predilección, es de la colección de
Vincent Van Gogh. Antes de ella admiré en esta obra el movimiento animado,
dejado por el pincel, y cargada de sensación e intensidad, la manera en que
él vio este tema tan mundano. El tema es un árbol y es llamdo "Árbol Mora".
La obra es pequeña, parece como si el artista acababa de pintar la tela.
Después de aquella visita a esta obra, permaneci conella en mi mente.
No se que motive a un artista crear o pintar su mundo, pero al caminar a
travéz de un huerto nogalero en el estado de Nuevo México pinté este árbol.
El juego de la luz del sol definió los contornos de una acequia, enmarcando
el árbol con un gran sentido y presencia el cual me llamo a pintar este
cuadro. Menciono el árbol mora no por hacer una comparación entre la obra
de Van Gogh y la mía, sino por compartir posiblemente el encanto que
conmueve al artista pintar lo que ve.
