Ayanna Nicole Floyd passionately loves what she does. She is an artist, classically trained and affirmed with a fine arts degree achieved at the Pennsylvania State University (USA). Her deep appreciation for art compelled her early on to join those who carry on the venerable tradition of honing their skills by studying and copying the masters in the manner insisted upon by Degas who once declared “You have to copy and recopy the masters, and it’s only after having proved oneself as a good copyist that you can reasonably try to do a still life of a radish.” Complementing her university studies are trips to the museé du Louvre in Paris, France and an ongoing initiative to review the collections offered by museums and exhibits across the United States.
Ayanna is first generation, born in the USA. Her lineage is rooted in Europe and Asia as well as in North America and Africa. Each branch of the family tree brought forth an artistic inclination. Etched in Ayanna’s early recollection are vivid images of family members rendering enchanting expressions in pen and ink, pastels, watercolors and oils. This early exposure fueled by a natural artistic ability enabled Ayanna to begin creating art at a young age. A deep appreciation for the arts across all genres was irrevocably instilled early on. This rich and diverse legacy remains the backdrop for Ayanna’s global perspective and artistic expression.
Ayanna is a disciplined artist. She understands and respects the creative process. Her approach and in-depth treatment of a chosen subject often result in further exploration of possibilities. Such experimentation with either the subject and/or the technique has resulted in several dramatic bodies of work, each unique in its choice of medium, palette and subject matter. This ability to grow, change and progress has generated a captivating portfolio reflective of the artist’s personal journey. Ayanna’s fresh eye and artistic capability allow her to move effortlessly from the disciplined world of fine art into computer graphics for the film and television industry. In all settings, her work is significant. There is a connection to things that matter. It has depth. There is a sense of the artist’s strength and integrity. It is lyrical. It is beautiful.
In my landscape series I have departed from the thick layers and textures of paint that I have used in the past. The landscapes are created with washes of color. The process incorporates countless layers of water that I infuse with acrylic hues. The result is a beautiful balance between calculated brushstrokes and random dripping which combine to create magnificent landscapes.
My purpose is deliberate. I want the materials to describe my subject. Air is not heavy nor is water dense. I am embracing striking hues and dripping washes to capture emotion and season. It is my adaptation of Chinese Water Painting through which my emotions can be expressed.
