Biography:
Xavier Leton (xavier@confetti.org) is an artist and a critic of new media. He has designed and realized confetti.org which is an artistic site, and lettrea.com which features an art catalog.

The site confetti.org collates animation technics, poestry, cinema, and installation practices. Through these various artistic practices, Xavier Leton sounds the reader about the deep relationship between texts and images, with the desire of eventually setting up an autonomous creation area where both readers and producers would share the various constraints underlying both actions, reading and realizing. Through constraining readings, Leton incites each visitor to directly participate to the realization of an art work, granting her a role where she may criticize both the creation process and the artist's function.

Leton was born in belgium and studied History of Arts and Anthropology at the "Universté Libre de Bruxelles". Since 1995, he has participated to a lot of exhibitions and festivals. Recently, he presented "Un et un et pas de deux" and "Parcours_urbains" as official selections of Videoforms festival (march 2002), he was invited to the E-Poetry festival (april 2001), and he was involved in many network creations with consortiums like ART & NET (march 2001), and Belgica Electronica, Electrolab 002 (april 2000). Leton moved to Marseilles (France) in 2001, where he works on theatrical forms which are extant under networks. Currently, he prepares the "festival intime" about e-writing.

Statements:
Since 1999, the work titled "Mazecorps" is reflecting a maze-like construction which refers to the possible relationships between cinema, poestry, and networking. That maze has four starting points, encoded by terms representing witnesses of arbitrary arrests. : "à présent - une arrestation - au matin - une mémoire" ("by now - an arrest - in the morning - a memory"). The arbitrary arrest of the photographic act is noticed for photographies are the key elements of mazecorps' story. Also the arbitrary arrest of the writer is clearly intimated since the verses of the poet are featured as sub-titles of a silent film. Above all, handled by the armed forces, the real discretionary arrest of any human who infringes a law is omnipresent. "Mazecorp" actually pays a tribute to Sémira Adamu who was executed by the belgian armed forces on tuesday, september 22, 1998. In the current release of "Mazecorps" (volume I), 12 films no bigger then 400kb each are presented. As for other works featured on confetti.org, we incite the visitor-actor to participate to the creation process of "Mazecorps". The visitor wishing to be an actor may send either a text or a photography, which would then be integrated to the current work (cf. photographies sub-titled "dire", which present several producers within a single image. size: 225 px - 150 px, format: .jpg ). Texts and photographies must be sent to mailto:xavier@confetti.org. "Mazecorps" will eventually be presented in situ as an installation, as soon as we'll find an area able to receive such an installation, where the perception of the audience depends on where it situates within the space. "Mazecorps" is also regularly released on CDRom which are available on request.
