Houston-based Avila was born in California and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. Ever since he was a child, a strong connection with drawing and painting has been present in his life. Always driven by a natural talent, that has kept him active within the art field. He studied International Relations from 1993 to 1994 and Architecture from 1994 to 1998 at Tecnológico de Monterrey. At that time he also worked on various graphic design projects. However, his biggest passion is Art, painting specially.

Layering his work with references to culture, art, and the self, he offers us works that at first appear direct and simple. But if one pays attention to them, it is clear how the artist describes an ideal world. And at the same time the real one as well, both of them complex and vibrant. It is typical the use of a figurative style and a skillful line when Avila paints.

These paintings are strange landscapes that affect and connect with interior spaces. That is the place where the scenes evolve, using color, light and very diverse inhabitants. That eventually seems to portray either a peaceful sweet dream or a nightmare where the canvas is overcome by a loneliness feeling.

The contrast can go beyond that, for these are works that can be just as meditative as they are notational. The artist starts from selecting a central idea that develops using an acute sense of composition and aesthetics. This ends up shaping in a way the creative process.

We can find also on one hand, cultural objects coming from Mexican society. The modern Mexico where the artist grew up: industrialized, chaotic and beautiful, container of naïve memories. And on the other hand, the American society: individualist, highly commercial, superficial and visually attractive, container of impressive memories and huge disappointments.
