Tom Brown’s work is experimental and innovative, not following any school, he works abstractly, often using unusual grounds and bases such as sodium silicate or fluorescent pigments, sometimes employing metal construction and textural components in his paintings.
Pursuing a parallel interest in design and architecture, Brown was concurrently drawn into designing, building and remodeling adobe houses in Santa Fe. In the 1960s and 1970s he concentrated on this work, becoming well known locally as a designer and builder. His work in this field did a great deal to create and establish the so-called Santa Fe style. Now once
more devoting full-time to painting, he is still exploring new ideas and techniques, seeking to stretch the viewer’s imagination into new untried areas of response. He is married to artist Renee Nemerov.
