Kevin AguiarBiography: Born in the suburbs of Toronto, Ontario, to a traditional working class family, I dreamt of becoming an artist from a very early age but pressures from family and community initially discouraged my creative aspirations. They pressed business as a direction that would be more suitable for providing a steady income and a secure future. Acquiescing to my family's desires, I enrolled in business school but realized quickly that my true destiny wasn't going to be found in the world of finance. During the subsequent year following my departure from college I drifted between various jobs. Unbeknownst to anyone, the experience that I was gaining set into motion a series of events that would lead me to that creative life that I had always dreamt of. Being involved in the reconstruction project at a glass factory began my interest in construction and architecture, and led to employment at a communications and design company. My interest in painting began with relationships that were forged during this period. After working consistently, drawing, painting and attending school, I set my focus on architecture and joined a medium sized firm that worked primarily on high-rise residential projects. As a junior designer, I worked tirelessly on the condominium projects that the company had been commissioned to design. I soon became disillusioned with the work, which had little or no aesthetic and social merit, and after two years I realized that I would rather commit myself to the pursuit of higher ideals than the pursuit of profit. Upon departing the architecture firm, I engrossed myself in creative work of a more personal nature. By 2001 I had established myself in Toronto's arts community. With a successful showing in the First Works series at Loop Gallery, I had completed my transformation into a professional artist. The exposure I gained led me to several creative partnerships, one of which inspired me to explore the creation of custom designed, handcrafted furniture. I see this as a natural continuation of my work in architecture, one that will enable me to complete my studies and certification. Until then, with my prior background, I have the legal right to design and build projects under 6000 sq ft. If you would like to purchase any of my work or you would like to make an inquiry about your upcoming renovation or new construction project, feel free to contact me.
