Roger Cummiskey |
| Biography: Roger, from Blackrock, County Dublin, in Ireland is a full time painter. He also lives and works for over half the year in southern Spain.
He exhibits widely on the world wide web, in solo and group exhibitions as well as in Galleries.
Roger has had paintings representing Ireland in London (1999), Stockholm (2000), New York (2000) and at the Florence Biennale in 2003 to which he has been invited again to exhibit in December 2005.
"I am a Watercolourist. I specialize in paintings which take their themes and titles from the wanderings and writings of James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Miguel de Cervantes and other Literary and Historical personalities. This has come from a lifelong interest in attempting to interpret in paintings what James Joyce et al., so eloquently wrote.”
This year Roger is producing a series of paintings based on the character, El Don Quijote from the novel by Spain’s most famous author, Miguel de Cervantes, which celebrates it’s 400th anniversary.
Of special interest to this exhibition, Roger tells of the connection between James Joyce and Henrik Ibsen. Joyce taught himself Dano-Norwegian in a three week period in 1900 so that he could read and write from Dublin to favourably criticise one of Ibsen’s plays at the time – When We Dead Awaken. Ibsen was so impressed that he wrote back to the young (18 year old) Joyce thanking him. Joyce had referred to “the naked drama” in Ibsen who was to be a great influence on Joyce.
