Caravaggio (1571-1610)
Caravaggio is also known as Michelangelo Merisi and as the second Michelangelo. Caravaggio painted mostly devotional art, he focused on figures and events from the New Testament and took seriously the mundane yet monumental quality of Christianity. He used Roman street people as the model for the Apostles and Mary. He used larger than life proportions, highly theatrical lighting and crowded his significant figures into shallow spaces.

The Sacrifice of Isaac
1603 circa Oil on canvas, cm 104x135

The canvas was probably sold by Caravaggio to Maffeo Barberini in 1603; the work was very appreciated if a copy after it was executed in 1610. Caravaggio pushes to extremes the dramatic effect of the scene, pointing out with his peculiar use of the light the terror on the face of the young Isaac and on the charming angel's profile. Realism also is expressed by the old Abraham'figure, while the landscape on the right recalls Venetian painting.
