Moustafa Al-Hatter Biography: Artist Statement The important change of my pictorial background took place In the Caribbean, I found myself immersed in the tropical light, which suggested an approximation and rediscovering of color, but the big change happened in Egypt I was touched by its ancient civilizations. Maybe the transformation in Egypt and in the Caribbean was due to the accumulation of remembrances of my travels to different countries all over the world that were finally settled and allowed the technical and stylistic form of my painting. Moreover I began to capture those magical and mysterious moments of life, from the obvious that can be seen by my eyes, to the visionary that is perceived by my heart and soul. In my work of art, I abandon the representation of reality, and stayed away from mundane affairs. There is an intention to paint from my memory, which gathers and moulds the remembrance of travels, promenades in mysterious old civilizations, and in tropical latitudes. The conventional means of expression is put aside, thus allowing spontaneity with the intention of preserving directness and originality of the living experience. I have placed my art into compartments, while maintaining a sense of unity. The small painted panels project a microcosm, each of which emerges from a wide rectangular background, suggesting the macrocosm. Moreover, the small panels reveal a subtle intention to represent the finite world in which we live, and to project it as the result of the infinite creation. Painted compartments differ in shape, movement and palette, sometimes suggesting the discontinuity of the cosmos. Nevertheless, I seek the impressions of the infinite world. I abandon the easel for the table, on which I can place larger panels, and meet the need for more room and full control. I like to increase both the size of the surface to be painted, as well as the area in which I display the activity. One senses that these paintings represent an achievement in a wider context that of the simple support surface. I do not use color to paint, but to give the spiritual and musical sensation which flows from my enigmatic interior. In other words, I reach the heart of the observer by intensifying all the colors of my palette, thus allowing the mind to find peace and harmony. One of my concerns is to establish the unity color-movement in order to turn the painted space into a piece of art. In addition to the process of placing the color, trying not to repeat the same range of tones. To describe the spiritual significance of my installation. I advocate that the highest meaning of my work of art is always Unity, and showed how it reveals and leads to the principal Unity, and how it reflects the mystery of the manifestation of the One in the many, and the multiplicity in that Unity. In my work of art, I don’t seek to lead the eye to an imagined world; on the contrary, I liberate it from all preoccupations of the mind. It does not transmit a specific ideas, but a state of being, which is at once repose and inner rhythm...the purest simile for the manifestation of divine reality, which is the center throughout, in each creature, and in each cosmos, without any being or any thing being able to claim to be in its sole reflection, creating an unending reflection of centers in each other: the “unity of being.” SELECTED PERIODICALS 1996 - June, La Nueva Al-Fida, issue no 56 (the whole page): El Pintor Moustafa Al Hatter, written by Blanca Guzman, Caracas, Venezuela. - May 26th , La brujula – Guia Cultural – Publicacion del CONAC : Fuera de Limites, Exposicion de Moustafa Al hatter, Caracas, Venezuela, - May 10th , El Nacional, Moustafa Ahmad Console de Egipto, Miembro de Honor de la Associcion Venezolano De Artistas Plasticas, Caracas, Venezuela, - April 22nd , El Universal Newspaper, social 3-17 : Las Pinturas del Consul de Egipto, Caracas, Venezuela, - April 12th, El Universal, Social, Comentarios Del Momento, En La UCAB, Caracas, Venezuela. - Excellencia Magazine, Year 9, No 13, Page 37: Exposicion de Pintura “Camino al Sol”, Caracas, Venezuela. - Excellencia Magazine, page 18: Moustafa Ahmad “Esencias”, written by dra Milagros Bello (Sociologa de art, Historiadora de Arte, Criticio de Arte, Y Curadora de Arte Actual), Caracas, Venezuela. - Excellencia Magazine , page 21: Miembro de honor, Caracas, Venezuela. 1998 - November 29th, Le Progres, issue no 251: UN Embassdeur peintre expose au Centre Culturel Espagnol. Vincenzo Balsamo Biography: (Painter/Engraver) Vincenzo Balsamo was born in June 1935 in Brindisi, Italy. He lived in Rome, Paris, Verona, now he lives in Corchiano, Italy. He studied at the San Giacomo Art School, Rome. Main exhibitions took place at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, National Gallery of Modern Art, X National Quadrennial, Chiostro del Bramante - (Rome); European Biennial - DUBROVNIK; Découvertes Nef Victor, Carrousel du Louvre - (Paris); "Santa Apollonia" Art Center Venezia, Nagahama Museum - (Japan); Museum of Modern Art - Arezzo; Matalon Museum - Milan; 4th Beijing International Art Biennial; Modern Art Gallery - Cento; Lu.C.C.A. Center of Contemporary Art - Lucca; A.C. Art Museum Beijing, Yixing Art Museum, Guangzhou Mayland Art Gallery, European Commission - Brussels; Art Fairs: Shanghai, Miami, New York, Canton, Moscow, New Delhi, Los Angeles, KIAF, Beijing, Toronto, In Arco, London, Bologna; Milano, Torino, Verona, etc.; and several participations in biennial/triennial of print. Vincenzo Balsamo paints since the fifties. His first artworks are figurative paintings. They regard Italian landscapes (Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Campania) particularly intense and intimate where the pictorial technique, composed by vibrant brush strokes, delights in a sort of play of fantastic tonalities. During the seventies Balsamo stops painting figurative works: It is the so-called “first abstraction” period where he actually returns to the coloured background of the landscapes, but without a hint of figuration and separated by a black sign that becomes the texture of the memory. During the late seventies Balsamo researches and experiments. Decomposizioni (1975-76) are informal, material, full bodied works, harsh in their pictorial expression. Nebulose (1977-78) are not envisaged as a celestial world, but as a mental and internal journey in search of the right balance between the gestural mark and - alongside and upon - the colour. Evocazioni (1978-79) are complex and introspective works characterized by strangely deformed, surreal and fantastic figures, symptoms of weariness and doubt. In the early eighties Balsamo strives to regain his expressive thought and spends time at his easel in order to rediscover a new, more congenial world. It is the so-called “second abstraction” period and he paints works inspired by an abstract-cubistic concept. In 1987 begins the “Lyrical Abstraction” phase where the sign, the colour and the light are made up among them as if they would peer into the human "I" City: Corchiano State: (Viterbo) Country: Italy Birthyear: 1935 Galleries: 1957 - BRINDISI, "Civic Centre" - Italy 1961 - ROME, "Il Camino" Gallery, 2 - 12 March - Italy 1963 - ROME, "Zizzari" Gallery - Italy - MILAN MARITTIMA, "La Bottega" Gallery - Italy 1965 - ZURIGO, "Burdeke" Gallery - SWISS - CARPI, "Del Ridotto" Gallery, 28 February - 11 March - Italy 1966 - ROME, "T. Zaher Bizri Biography: Zaher El-Bizri is a young Lebanese artist. He specializes in painting and mixed-media pictorial and plastic arts. He developed a refined expertise in watercolors, in oil paintings, charcoal drawing, and graphic design, with a highly skilled use of Information Technology tools besides classical artistic media. El-Bizri focuses principally on representational and pictorial depictions of everyday scenes and quotidian intimate public spaces, of diverse characters and portraits, while being particularly inspired by the Levantine Mediterranean cultural milieu, and primarily by the architecture of the medieval quarters of the ancient Lebanese port city of Sidon (Saida). His artistic endeavors explore the profound promising potentials that remain presently contained within classical styles in painting, as well as experimenting with abstract configurations in pictorial art. His artistic activities are also situated within urban places, and they act as inspirational catalysts for stimulating dynamic cultural practices in the public domain in the form of installations, sculptures, and series of murals. El-Bizri received his Diploma in Fine Arts (Beaux Arts) in 2000, from the Lebanese University in Beirut. His prolific artistic productions and creative works have been exhibited on a regular basis since 1998 in numerous prestigious art galleries and venues. He has been also formally invited to participate in multiple international and national artistic events and cultural festivals organized by art associations, cultural societies, and diverse distinguished learned institutions, including the UNESCO, The Arab Cultural Club (Beirut), the Centre Culturel Français, and the Forum de Beyrouth. He furthermore received several awards and honorary citations in recognition of his artistic talent and the merits of his oeuvre. His work has also been communicated in public talks, reviewed in collective monographs, and covered by the press, in addition to various radio and television interviews. miháy bodó Biography: Mihály Bodó (b. 1957) studied sculpture at the Falculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona. His studies of painting are related to the well known Torres Garcia Atelier (TTG). His teacher and friend was the genial New York painter, sadly no longer with us, Bruno Fonseca. One of the most important characteristics of this training is the reworking of traditional painting through a constructive approach. The new generation of this atelier to which Mihály Bodó belongs, attempts to convert painting, using the most recent knowledge and emotions in fine art, into the "celebration of vision" (Nietsche). The general decadence of culture affects the painter as much as the viewer. Despite the recent slump in cuality, painting can still continue to weave its age-old threads. Let´s not forget that painting connects with the deepest human mysteries, and should not be left to the mercy of transitory fashions. Mihály Bodó´s work, from the earliest paintings onward, presents a unified search: expressivity, construction, a full knowledge of the profession, complete preparation of drawing and plasticity, metaphysical content and the complex use of colours and materials. His earlier studies of engineering and philosophy probably influence the rational structure of the paintings, but behind the image burns a temperament of original talent. In each painting there is an interweaving of pictorial analysis and synthesis. This does not contradict the fact that, according to Bodó, "a piece of work in itself is not important, but rather the daily renaissance and functioning of the atelier, because the vitality of the atelier relates the enigma of personal life with other human thinkers, alive or dead." Michael Bowdidge Biography: Since leaving college I have used a wide range of found materials in order to explore aspects of transformation and identity. Six years ago I started to work with computers. This use of 'visual sampling technology' has always seemed like a natural progression from my previous practice. Each print originates from a digital photograph (or sometimes from a combination of several) which is then heavily manipulated using imaging software until it begins to lose its original identity and starts to become something new. This process of improvised abstraction often leads me back to images which contain suggestions of pictorial space which were not present in the original. The finished piece represents an intuitive attempt to capture, distil and make explicit some aspect of place or experience in an image which still remains mysterious. I am trying to make work which simultaneously invites and confounds the viewer. In order to do this I am searching for a visual language which is both accessible and yet capable of subtlety and depth. The quest for ‘presence’ is also of great importance to me, though I find it very difficult to say exactly what this quality entails. I only know that it is either there or it is not. Trying to understand this phenomenon is one of the driving forces behind my artistic practice. Working exclusively from my own photographs for the past eighteen months has led me to a growing awareness of the underlying themes of my art. I am inspired by the post -industrial area in which I live (the Lea Valley in London and in particular the canal on which my boat is moored) and find the imagery which surrounds me strangely resonant. The grass grows, water flows and machines rust. In these things I find myself.
