Wheel to the Sea
Wheel to the Sea is a bi-annual wheelchair hike. People who use wheelchairs are assisted
in a 4 mile trek to the ocean by the Key Clubs of Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park High Schools and
other volunteers. Breakfast is provided by the Northridge Kiwanis and a beach barbeque by
the Thousand Oaks Kiwanis.
The program is administered by the Conejo Recreation and Park District (805) 889-4688 and
conducted by the
Wilderness Institute
with participation from the Mountain Bike Unit ("MBU")
and the Highway Patrol. The MBU has over 100 volunteer bicyclists who have patrolled the major
mountain parks in the Santa Monica Mountains for over 80,000 hours since 1987.
Chris Honicky (d. March 2000) was one of the regular participants.
